SERENE SHADE:
FOR SLEEPING AND DREAMING

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CORE STUDIO IV

SPRING 2026

Your brain's priority is to keep you safe and alive, not calm and relaxed, which may lead to feelings of anxiety. Sleeping and the dark can heighten anxiety as they evoke primal feelings of vulnerability. To counteract restless thoughts at the time of falling asleep, the cabanda-like structure aims to ease the transition into sleep by curating a serene beach vacation experience.

The wood frame and shoji screen structure allows a comforting warmth to enter the space while shading eyes from the sun. Each side of the structure has a sliding shoji screen shade to allow guests to adjust the shade to their comfort.

The calming space is a place for meditation and to calm the brain and body. The sleep space has Tatami mat bedding for sleeping on the beach facing the southern water. After taking the time your brain needs to unwind, you can fall asleep worry-free, listening to the sound of birds and the sea.
